A 92-year-old Sunday school teacher has been chosen by the Town of Clark’s Harbour as its Volunteer of the Year
Esther Nickerson has a long association with the West Head Advent Church, is a life-time member of the Ladie’s Missionary Group and had an active youth group for many years. She has campaigned for several local and provincial charitable organizations and worked as a volunteer with a visitation program in Clark’s Harbour where she spent time with shut-ins and many nights sitting with the very ill.

Her passion for helping others made her volunteer as an ambulance attendant and she is an active member of the C.S.I. New Horizon Senior’s Club.

“Oh, I love people,” said the sociable senior.

“I missed my calling. I should have been a nurse.”

Town of Clark’s Harbour councillor Sherry Atkinson is one of Nickerson’s biggest fans.

“This woman has taught a Sunday school class for over 60 years,”said Atkinson.

“She still has this ladie’s class and the ladies just love it,” she said.

Nickerson rushed to add: “They call themselves my girls and oh I love’em. I could ask any of those girls to come if I was sick and they would.”

Nickerson will be attending the Provincial Volunteer Awards ceremony and dinner on Thursday, April 24 at the Westin Hotel in Halifax.

“I think she’s done her share. Any accolades she gets she deserves,” said Atkinson.
