LOWE, Helen Mae - 85, Milton passed away peacefully in Queens General Hospital, Wednesday, March 12, 2008, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Milton on April 15, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Bernard and Bessie (Whynot) Anthony. She was the last surviving member of her family. She lived a full life devoting so much of her time caring for her family, and was such an important part in the lives of her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren. She will always be remembered for her witty sense of humor, her penchant to speak her mind, and her desire to surround herself with her family by creating any excuse to have a party. She loved animals, plants, music, and being outdoors. She was also an avid BINGO player. Helen is survived by sons: Clayton (Ardith) Anthony, Vincent (Lillian), both of Milton, Vernon (Mary) of Brooklyn, and Mitchell (Laura) of Liverpool; daughters Donna (Fred) Holborn of Halifax, Sylvia Whynot, and Rita (Roy Oickle) Whynot, both of Milton; 15 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; and three great great grandchildren. She was predeceased by husband Edward; sisters Olive and Ruth; brother Perry; sons Barry and Gordon; four grandchildren; and one great grandchild. There will be no visitation by family request. A graveside committal of her ashes and a celebration of her life will be held at a later date. Donations may be made to the SPCA, Queens Daycare Association, or the Children’s Wish Foundation.

Mona Geneva Graves – 83, of Kentville, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 11, 2008 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville, with her husband and best friend, Jim by her side. Born in Kentville in 1924, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Keddy) Gee. She enjoyed knitting, flowers and listening to spiritual music and stories. Most important in her life was her family and the Lord. Her faith helped her through the challenging times of illness over the past few years. She is survived by her beloved husband of 62 years and best friend, James “Jim”; five daughters, Linda (the late John) Burgess and Josie (Norm) Swinamer, both of Kentville; Mary (Charles) Tidwell, Woodstock, Ontario; Barbara (John) Thorne, Seabright, Halifax County; Mona (Owen) Power, Canning; seven sons, Bill (Sandi), Coldbrook; David (Lynn), Tony (Chris), Steven (Crystal), Andy (Charlene) and Adam (Kathy), all of Kentville; Mark (Annemarie), Canning; two sisters, Josephine Atwell and Barb (Dick) Moore, both of Kentville; 25 grandchildren; 33 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, Peter; a sister, Dorothy Rhynard; three brothers, George, Leonard “Red” and William “Bill”; four grandchildren, Shayne, Nicky, Cathy and Peter. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville and there was no visitation by family request. A private family funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, March 14, 2008 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, Reverend Robert Billings officiated. Family flowers only, by request. Kathleen May “Kay” Crandall – 84, formerly of Kentville, passed away Wednesday, March 12, 2008 in the Wolfville Nursing Home. Born in Sheffield Mills, Kings County, she was a daughter of the late James and Ruby (Benjamin) Legge. She had been a homemaker and for a period of time, worked as a cook at Ann’s Restaurant, Kentville. She is survived by a daughter, Shirley (Bill) Buchanan, Kentville; a son, Darrell Crandall (Susan Shiers), Dartmouth; daughter-in-law, Paulette “Polly” Crandall, Centreville, a brother, John (Charlotte) Legge, Centreville; three grandchildren, Christopher and Patrick Crandall and Allen (Marie Claire) Buchanan; four great grandchildren, Claire, Richard, Jacqueline and Bréanne; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Russell; a son, David; two sisters, Josie Bezanson and Jean Best. Visitation was held from 7-9 p.m. Thursday, March 13, 2008 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service was held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 14, 2008, Reverend Doctor Judith Saunders officiated. Truth Celeste O’Rourke – 86, of Kentville, passed away Thursday, March 13, 2008 at home. Born in Kentville, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Lulu (Hushen) Moore. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, homemaker and friend. She volunteered with the Emergency Measures Organization and was a member of St. James Anglican Church, Kentville. Her family and friends were very important to her and throughout her life, expressed this in many ways. She is survived by two daughters, Cathy-Lu O’Rourke, Kentville; Susan (Gerry) MacDonald, Dartmouth; two sons, Robert “Bob”, Kentville; Daniel “Dan”, Coldbrook; one sister, Dorothy Daigle, Kentville; three brothers, Victory “John” and Richard, both of Kentville; Everette, Coldbrook; two grandchildren and the light of her life, Celeste and Patrick MacDonald; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert T. O’Rourke; five sisters, Jessie, Thelma, Myrtle, Marjorie and June; four brothers, Frederick, George, Harry and Murray. Thelma “Jean” Moore – 74, of Church Street, North Kentville, passed away Thursday, March 13, 2008 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Kentville, she was a daughter of the late Burris and Minnie (Kynock) Rafuse. She was a graduate of Kings County Academy and in 1952, participated in the Annapolis Valley Apple Blossom Festival as Princess Kentville. She was a member of St. James Anglican Church, Kentville and had been active in several aspects of the church, including the choir and the Anglican Church Women. In her younger years, she enjoyed skating and was an active hockey mom. She also enjoyed knitting, crocheting and gardening. She is survived by her husband, George “Allan”; two sons, Gregory “Greg” and Bryan (Vicki), both of Kentville; a sister, Geraldine (Harry) Slaunwhite, Sackville; a brother, Ralph (Debbie), Windsor, Ontario; two granddaughters, Kara and Jenifer; nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a sister, Muriel “Joyce” Steacy. Visitation was held from 7-9 p.m. Sunday, March 16, 2007 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, March 17, 2008, The Reverend Archdeacon Lynn Uzans officiated. Helen Mary Huskins, 86 of 51 Hibernia St., Yarmouth passed away March 14, 2008 in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born in Yarmouth, she was the daughter of the late Everette & Emma (Smith) Huskins. Helen was a Brownie leader for many years. She was a member of St. Ambrose Cathedral. Her hobbies included sewing, knitting and cooking. Surviving are sisters Muriel Smith, Kelly’s Cove, Beatrice McKinnon, St. John, NB., Elizabeth (Russell) Amirault, Yarmouth, brothers George, Yarmouth, John (Eunice), Halifax, Anthony (Shannon), Winnipeg. She was predeceased by her brother, Wayne. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sweeny’s Funeral Home, Yarmouth. There was no visitation by family request. Funeral Service was Sunday, March 16th at 2:00 pm in Sweeny’s Funeral Home Chapel, Yarmouth with Father John MacPherson officiating. Otis Russell Meister – (1916-2008). It is with sadness that we announce the death of Otis Russell Meister, New Ross. He passed away at Grand View Manor, Berwick, on March 14, 2008. Born in New Ross, he was the only son of the late Edgar St. Clair Meister and Amy (McDow) (Meister) Pemberton. He was just three months short of his 92nd birthday. Dad loved the woods, and everything that went with it. His garden was his pride and joy and with help he was able to have one until just a couple of years ago. He was a life-long member of Saint Augustine’s Anglican Church where he served as Warden for many years. He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Wilhelmina “Sally” (Hiltz) Meister, Grand View Manor. Also surviving are a daughter, Leona (Richard) Sweeney, Halifax; sons, Robert (Joy) and Frank (Beatrice), both of New Ross. He is survived by eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a daughter at birth, Amy Edith, and step-father, Carl Pemberton. Special thanks to Dr. Don Seaman for his wonderful care over the years and to Dr. Goddard and the staff of Grand View Manor for their loving care for the past two years. There was no visitation by request. The funeral service took place at 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 17, 2008 from Saint Augustine’s Church, Forties, Reverend Leonard Bednar officiated. CROWELL, Nancy Anne - 60, Cedar Lake, Yarmouth Co., passed away March 12, 2008, in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Nancy was born on February 9, 1948, in Yarmouth and was raised in Gardener's Mills, Yarmouth Co. She was a daughter and youngest child of the late Everette and Clara (Crosby) Reeves. After having received her Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education degrees from Acadia University, Nancy became employed as a school teacher, first at Hebron and, later on, at Meadowfields. She retired in 2003, after having taught for thirty three years. Nancy had a great zest for life and enjoyed numerous hobbies. Amongst her favorites were camping at Keji Park, attending blue grass and country festivals, traveling, creating beautiful stained glass pieces, enjoying the art of photography and working on her needlecraft. She was also an avid fan and supporter of the Gateways Baseball Team, having attended many tournaments in Clark's Harbour and Cape Breton. Nancy will be remembered as a dedicated teacher, devoted wife, loving mother and sister, cherished friend to many. She is survived by her loving husband, Alton, Cedar Lake; daughter, Lisa Gould, Cedar Lake; son, Jason Gould, South Korea; sisters, Helen Hurlburt, Gardener's Mills; Phyllis Devine, Dayton; former husband, Bruce Gould, South Ohio. She was predeceased by her only brother, Bill Reeves. The funeral service was held Tuesday, March 18, in North Baptist Church at 3 p.m., Rev. Bill Newell officiated.
