March 9 to March 15, 2008 VERGE, Richard H. - 47, of Liverpool, passed away peacefully in Queens General Hospital, March 9, 2008. Born in Halifax, he was the son of the late Harris W. and Marie (Broughm) (Verge) Tonary. Richard was a former employee with Savaco in Burnside and was an aircraft refinisher for IMP Aerospace for 17 years. He worked production at Mersey Seafoods in Liverpool and as a night watchman. His hobbies included cars and motorcycles. He is survived by his wife Yvonne (Gray) (Boutilier); daughter Amanda at home; brother Thomas of Port Mouton; sisters Edytha Freeman of Dartmouth and Trudy Freeman of Liverpool. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool. A private family memorial service will be held later in the spring. No flowers by request. Donations may be made to the family or Canadian Cancer Society.
March 9 to March 15, 2008 COLE - George Robert, 57, of Mount Uniacke, Hants County, passed away Sunday, March 9, 2008, at the V. G. Site, Q.E. II, Halifax. Born November 11, 1950, in Halifax, he was the son of the late Russell and Jean (Barnes) Cole. George was employed as an IT Consultant by HRM for the past several years. George’s true satisfaction came from his volunteer work - a member of the Naval Reserves; Mt. Uniacke Fire Dept.; manager of various Minor Hockey teams and lastly as a treasurer of the newly formed Junior ‘C’ Avon River Rats. Many young hockey players were encouraged and supported by George over the years and he was well liked by players, coaches and parents. George’s favorite times were the family vacations spent on Grand Manan where he and Lorna were married and their daughter Sarah was christened. Sharing this special place with Sarah and Daryl, whom he loved so deeply, was something he looked forward to each and every year. Although his life was too short, he made the most of the years he had. He is survived by his wife of 28 years, the former Lorna Jean Horsman; daughter, Sarah; son, Daryl; sister, Gerri (Doug) Hewitt, Winnipeg; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his paternal grandparents, John and Violet Cole; maternal grandparents, Ninyan and Stella Barnes. Cremation has taken place. Visitation was 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, March 11, in Lindsay’s Windsor Funeral Home, 194 King Street, Windsor. Funeral service was 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 12, 2008, in Lindsay’s Windsor Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Russ Conway officiating, assisted by Pastor Christopher Ivany. March 9 to March 15, 2008 MAXNER (DeVenney), Patricia Margaret - 78, Windsor, passed away peacefully Sunday, March 9, 2008 at home, with her family by her side after a courageous journey with ALS. First and foremost a mother and a grandmother, Pat was always caring for others, even in the midst of her own illness. She will be remembered by family and friends for her never-ending supply of homemade cookies, her love of a Saturday night church supper, her nimble dancing feet and her always dazzling jewels. She was dearly loved and will be greatly missed. Mother to Peter (Christine), Upper Falmouth and his children, Paul and Elizabeth; Barry (Nancy), Windsor, and their children, John, Andrew and Janet; Judith (Claude) O’Hara, Windsor and their daughter, Colette; Tim (Crystal), Canning, and their children Brittany and Savannah; Gail, Greenwich and her daughter, Sarah; great-grandchildren, Nathaniel, Heidi and Ethan. March 9 to March 15, 2008 Clyde Lormer Harvey – 84, of Steam Mill, Kings County passed away on Sunday, March 9, 2008 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Kentville, he was a son of the late Barry and Margaret (Mahar) Harvey. He was a veteran of the Second World War and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Kings Branch No. 6, Kentville. He had been employed as a truck driver and later as a Commissionaire. He worked on the Canso Causeway and was proud to have led the parade, being the first one to officially cross the causeway. He is survived by his wife, the former Ethel Haggerty; two daughters, Shirley (Doug) Tracey and Norma (Edward) Webster, both of Aldershot, Kings County; a son, Sheldon, Steam Mill; a special nephew, Bev Harvey, Centreville; three sisters, Eleanor (Earl) Haggerty, Centreville; Leota O’Connell, Evergreen Home for Special Care, Kentville; Joan (Lawrence) Arnburg, Steam Mill; three brothers, Jim (Berneda) Coldbrook; George (Jane), New Minas; Maurice (Florence), Aldershot; seven grandchildren, Barry (Dana) Tracey, Keith Tracey, Ronald (Tammy) Webster, Leonard (Christena) Webster, Bernadette (Rickey) Fraser, Randall Harvey and Sonia Harvey; 14 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers, Ken, Gordie and Robert in infancy. March 9 to March 15, 2008 Alvin Lewis Macumber, 87, of Union Corner, Hants County, passed away Monday, March 10, 2008, at his home. Born December 27, 1920, in Union Corner, Hants County, Nova Scotia, he was the son of the late Mabel (Collard) Macumber-Parker and also the late Loran Macumber. Alvin retired in 1986 from the Nova Scotia Department of Transportation, and had previously worked in the woods. He operated heavy equipment with the Department of Lands and Forests; Hennessey and Spicer Construction; and at the Barite Mines, Walton. He was a member of the Canadian Armed Forces for four years. He was an avid gardener; enjoyed playing bingo; loved family and animals. He is survived by his brother, Frank “Owen” Parker, Union Corner; sisters, Dorothy (Allan) Dillman, Lakelands; Eileen Lowthers, Three Mile Plains; sister-in-law, Rosalie Macumber, Centre Burlington; several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his step father, Frank Parker; sister, Violet Macumber; brothers, Howard, Ralph and Robert Macumber; brother-in-law, Murray Lowthers; sister-in-law, Ruby (Hines) Macumber. March 9 to March 15, 2008 Frances Louise Tanner - 88, Port Williams, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 10, 2008, in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born on November 7, 1919, in Ashmore, Digby Co., she was a daughter of the late David and Edna (Bougeois) Kinney. Frances was employed for many years in ladies retail clothing sales, retiring in 1986. She was an active member of the Seniors Club and a member of the Loyal Workers, Port Williams. Frances was a devoted mother and grandmother who enjoyed walking, gardening and baking. Besides her parents, Frances was predeceased by her husband, Walter, and brother, Percy. She will be sadly missed by her daughter, Wanda (Robert) Ramey, Coldbrook; granddaughters, Rachel Leonard (Matthew), Dartmouth; Dr. Patricia Ramey, New Jersey; sister, Hilda Allen, New Minas, and two great-granddaughters. Cremation has taken place. No visitation by request. March 9 to March 15, 2008 LEWIS, Franklyn W. “Frank” – 66, 4 Bond Street, Yarmouth, passed away on Tuesday, March 11, 2008 in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born October 23, 1941 in South Ohio, he was a son of the late Leslie James and Eva May (Durkee) Lewis. Frank worked hard for the Boys and Girls Club of Yarmouth for several years. He knew and cared for so many people, and he loved others more than himself. He had a great love for life, for Jehovah and for his family, especially his wife, Gail (Sabean) Lewis, his son Calvin Lewis, Alberta; grandchildren, Jordan Robichaud and Sienna Lewis; a brother, Murray Lewis, Exeter, Ont., and a sister, Nellie Crosby, Yarmouth, as well as a large extended family. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a sister in infancy, as well as by brothers, James and Raymond. Cremation has taken place under the direction of H. M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, Yarmouth, and there was no visitation by request. A memorial service was held at 2 PM, Saturday, March 15 from the Kingdom Hall of the Jehovah Witnesses, Chegoggin, Mr. Jim Smith officiated. Born in Hortonville, Kings County, she was a daughter of the late Ensley E. and Eunice E. (Pinch) Boyd. She had been a homemaker and was a member of the United Church of St. Paul and St. Stephen, Kentville, where she was involved with the North End UCW. She is survived by a daughter, Marina (Mac) Weaver, Kentville; a son, Charles (Gloria), Bolton, Ontario; four grandchildren, Jeffrey, Lynn, Melanie and Kim; four great grandchildren, Stephen, Megan, Talen and Kenzie; several nieces and nephews. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was predeceased by her husband, Edmund Burgess Calkin; an infant daughter, Ardythe; two brothers, Leverett and Albert; a grandson, Kevin. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville and there was no visitation by family request. A private family graveside service will be held at a later date in the Berwick Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory may be made to Grand View Manor.
