Yoga instructor Monique D’Eon will be teaching a beginner Yoga class for people 50 and over on Thursday, March 20, at 10 a.m., at the Sherose Island Recreation Centre.
D’Eon, who has close to five years experience teaching yoga, says there are valuable benefits to this form of exercise.
Students definitely have more range of flexibility and motion, that’s what I’ve seen in the past,” she said.
“Also more strength.”
D’Eon says she will be bringing some of her props like foam blocks to make it more comfortable for participants and that one of her goals is to teach them to become more body conscious.
“It’s funny, I have had some girls come back to me and say, ‘yeah, I’ve noticed, even when I’m washing the dishes now how I’m standing and if I’m shifting my weight more on one foot, or if my feet are turned out.’ Some people definitely have zero awareness of their bodies,” she said.
There is no charge for the first class and at its conclusion there will be a discussion to access interest for continued instruction.
“In the past it’s been difficult for me to get a good committed group in Barrington,” said D’Eon.
“The first class I might have 20 people sign up, but by the last one, it’s dwindled down to eight, compared to here (West Pubnico) where it’s as busy as it’s ever been.
