A power outage that affected more than 5,000 people at one point Wednesday and continued in localized pockets into Thursday morning in Kings County continues to be a headache for Nova Scotia Power (NSP).

NSP spokesperson Glennie Langille said Thursday morning that the story actually began Saturday night. “Weather caused damage on a transmission line between Canning and Hillaton,” she said, and the line collapsed Wednesday evening around 6 p.m.

Crews responded and literally “tramped the line,” Langille said, adding that the problem was very hard to find.

Repairs were done to get some of the affected communities in the Kentville, New Minas, Wolfville and surrounding areas back up and most had power by 2:15 a.m. Thursday.

However, ancillary problems caused additional outages into the morning. Langille said, “we had it down to about 100 customers without power this morning,” but due to the difficulties, “it’s about several hundred in various locations” at the moment.

“It’s hard to get it completely stable,” she said, and was reluctant to put a time frame on when power would be restored to all customers. However, she said, “I know they’re working hard on it.”
