Winning is nothing new for Kentville’s Philip Brown, but, at the same time, every competition is - well - special.
Brown returned recently from the Special Olympics national Winter Games in Quebec City, where he won four medals in speedskating: one gold and two bronze in individual events and a silver as part of a relay team.
Brown was one of three athletes to represent the Kings and Annapolis Region at the national competition. Anthony Chandler competed in snowshoeing and Eileen Ramsay in cross-country.
Brown, who has now to his reckoning won 79 medals, plaques and awards in provincial and national Special Olympic competition, was recognized March 6 by the Town of Kentville and Mayor Dave Corkum for his most recent accomplishments.
Corkum said he and other town officials are certainly proud of Brown’s success in Special Olympic events, both recently and throughout his 15-year career, as well as that of all Kings County Special Olympic athletes.
“He’s an inspiration to us all,” Corkum said. “He will go down in history as one of Kentville’s great athletes. I can’t imagine anyone as decorated as Philip has been in sports through the Special Olympics.”
For his part, Brown said he was ecstatic at his recent success and hopes it will be an inspiration to others who have yet to fulfill their dreams.
“Doing all the training and all of that and supporting everyone else, it’s just heartwarming that I can bring home something like this, and hopefully I can achieve my dreams for other people who haven’t been able to achieve their dreams yet.”
