Community responds to family request
“It takes a village to raise a child.”
This famous saying still remains true to this day. Recently, Cole Clattenburg, a five-year-old boy with Down syndrome was assessed at the Assistive Technology Centre in Lunenburg to determine his level of skill in using computers for learning.
It was recommended that he use a touch screen monitor since he is not yet ready to learn to use a mouse.
The Liverpool Lions Club and Primrose Computers, after receiving a request on behalf of the family from Donna Dexter, Program Coordinator with Queens Early Childhood Development Association, partnered to provide the monitor to Cole’s family. When they were presented with the monitor, Cole’s parents, Jennifer and Rick Clattenburg, expressed their appreciation to George Mitchell, King Lion. “This will help Cole so much. He loves using the computer.”
Staff at the Assistive Technology Centre will now create special programs, using photographs of Cole’s own family, pets and toys, to encourage him to learn skills like matching, identifying and requesting.
Donna Dexter commented that, “We are so blessed to live in Queens County, where there is a thriving sense of community. It is so uplifting to see organizations and individuals who welcome, and even seek out, opportunities to help a child and his family.”
