Queens County athlete medals at provincials
After learning to ski from the time she could walk, Abby Lewis has been racing since the age of 12. She just returned with winning results from the Nova Scotia Cross Country Ski Championships and the Eastern Canada Championships.
“At the Easterns I wasn’t quite as pleased with my race. I wouldn’t care about the placing but I didn’t feel good about how I raced at all,” explained Lewis. “So it was just good at the provincials this last weekend to get a good race in.”
Lewis is currently in Grade 11 at Liverpool Regional High School.
The provincial championships took place in Cape North, Cape Breton.
She competed in the 11 kilometre classic race, placing first.
Lewis then placed second in the 5.5 kilometre skate competition.
The Haywood NorAm Eastern Canada Championships took place in Quebec Feb. 1-3 in which the Nova Scotia Cross Country Ski team competed.
Lewis has been apart of the team for the past four years.
“It’s a pretty big event,” stated Lewis; “there were 600 athletes there.”
Dubbing the event as lots of fun, Lewis competed in the junior girls (aged 17/18) 1.2 kilometre sprint placing 41st out of 60.
She also competed in the junior girls 10 kilometre classic event placing 49th out of 60.
Something new is learned every race, said Lewis, as a race is the best way to show weaknesses.
“I love skiing,” she added.
Now that the season is over, Lewis will start training for canoe racing with her father.
