Her essay on ‘Nova Scotians: Making the Change Environmentally’ landed her a $1500 bursary in the 2007 Nova Scotia Recycles Contest Region 6 division, but for Danielle St. Louis, environmental consciousness is a daily goal.
When she learned about the Resource Recovery Fund Board’s contest she says she wanted to contribute her advice through the essay.

The Grade 12 student is a member of the Barrington Municipal High School Enviro Green Team and has volunteered with Cape Sable Important Bird Area Nature Camps.

In her home life, St. Louis has found many ways to be mindful of the environment.

“Being a teenager, it’s easy to carpool with friends, cut back on long showers and find in-style used clothing at local Frenchy's.

“There’s a lot of organic food in Barrington that I buy as much as possible. Also, at Sobeys and Superstore there's cool eco-friendly shopping bags, instead of plastic,” she said.

In her essay, St. Louis encourages youth to look for and purchase items with Eco-labels.

“They are found on food, personal care products, energy appliances, cleaning products and many more daily items,” she wrote.

“Eco labels suggest what may be in the food, what chemicals are not in personal hygiene products, and also what cleaning products are biodegradable. Seeing a simple label is convenient to youth who are busy and in a rush, as well to their parents or guardians.”

St. Louis, a Woods Harbour resident, has been accepted to Dalhousie University and plans to major in Marine Biology.

“Living so close to the ocean has given me strong interest in this field. I someday hope to work with conservation of marine species,” she said.
