The Maritime Junior A Hockey League has announced its annual regular season award winners.
Voting from all 12 MJAHL teams resulted in selections for Most Valuable Player, Rookie of the Year, Best Goaltender and others. As well, votes were cast for First Team All-Stars.
Two Yarmouth Mariners were awarded for their play this season. Jamie Klie was named best defenseman and defence all-star and Justin Saulnier was named centre all-star.
Selected as best defenseman, Klie stood out in the crowd defensively but was also a proficient point-getter earning 54 points in as many outings (second behind teammate Alex Soucy).
Last season, the MJAHL’s Most Valuable Player came in the form of goal scoring. This year’s winner was a player who did his best at preventing scoring. Gatineau, Quebec native Pierre Alexandre Marion of the Truro Bearcats, who performed consistently in net for the Bearcats all season is this year’s MVP. Marion, who came to Truro from the St. John’s Fog Devils of the QMJHL, adds to a long list of outstanding keepers to shine in the MJAHL as a Truro Bearcat.
Marion sported a GAA of 2.18 and a saves % of .932 after 45 games and 2664 minutes of play. Marion also led the league with 6 shut-out wins. Marion was also named as goaltender for the 07/08 All–Star roster.
Another goaltender accomplished a great deal in his first season in the MJAHL and it has earned him Rookie of the Year. Evan Mosher of the Miramichi Timberwolves takes the Rookie award after a stellar season in which he sported a 2.54 GAA and a .910 saves percentage. Mosher, 18, won 29 games (one more than Marion) and earned 3 shut-outs.
The 2007/2008 regular season scoring champion was decided on Thursday night, Feb. 28, as Jordan Knox of the Weeks Cushers earned two points to slip past Itan Chavira of the Yarmouth Mariners to take the title with 86 points (vs. Chavira’s 85). Knox, who has been with the Capitals since 04/05, started the season in Summerside and was traded at the deadline to the Crushers. Knox played 48 games and was good for 1.79 points each time he hit the ice.
