Queens County residents competing at National Winter Games
Team Nova Scotia has a large contingent of Queens County residents competing at the 2008 Special Olympics National Winter Games in Quebec City this week.
In an email from the games, Head Coach Better Ann Daury of Queens County offered some sad news, however. “It has been a little hard on the curlers because I have to give you the sad news that John Cody passed away. Life support was taken off on Sunday and he passed away yesterday (Feb. 25) in hospital. The boys have been very emotional but we are trying our best to help them through. This will be a great loss to the Chester area.”
Cody was the Curling and Golf Coach.
As of Feb. 28, the team had already garnered six medals, including a first place finish from Alexander Shankel of Liverpool in Snowshoe.
Curlers Roger Robar, Sean Giffin, Mark Swinamer, and Floyd Thompson, and Coach Lindey Penny are also competing as members of the Team as are other Snowshoers, Jennifer McIntosh and Emily Latta.
Daury also wrote: “All is going well but we would love to hear from those back home. You can send messages to TeamNS2008@hotmail.com.”
The following is a press release issued Feb. 29 by Team Nova Scotia.
Team Nova Scotia has completed their divisioning process in all six sporting events which means that today and the upcoming two days will see all members competing in their registered events here at the 2008 National Winter Games in Quebec City.
The eight members of the snowshoe contingent have faced some tough competition in today’s events.
Head Coach, Betty Ann Daury was truly beaming as she shared with the other 55 members of her team the remarkable success of her athletes in the first of Team Nova Scotia’s medal count.
“While our female athletes were extremely successful in capturing five Gold medals for our Team, the men, who’s competition was extremely fierce, showed tremendous courage and determination shaving seconds off both their individual and personal best times. Tomorrow we head into the finals for both the 400 and 800 metre races with high hopes of victory in all aspects of our sport.”
Other highlights of today’s events included a bronze medal placement of Speed Skater Phillip Brown of Annapolis Valley; two wins and one loss for our Floor Hockey Team (Dartmouth Nova Scotia) and two losses for our Curling Team by a very small margin with them being overtaken in the last end by two and one points respectively.
Tomorrow marks a very busy and exciting day for Team Nova Scotia as our figure skaters complete the second component of their competition to determine their final result; Floor Hockey competed at 9:00 a.m. to determine their progression to the Gold Medal Game and Cross Country skiers are completing their 100 M, 500 M, and 1K races.
