Ashley Nickerson’s science fair project tested lunchables for preservatives. After two months at room temperature, the cheese, meat and crackers remained virtually unchanged. She didn’t try it to see how it tasted but did consider offering it to someone else.
“I was going to feed it to my sister but my Mom wouldn’t allow it,” said the Grade 7 Barrington Municipal High School student.

Nickerson’s project was one of many at the annual BMHS Science Fair this morning.

Grade 8 students Paige Symonds and Breanna Walker were curious if music affected the pulse rate.

“We tried two country, two rock, two pop and two rap songs,” said Symonds.

“There was no pattern in the result, none of them affected the pulse. But when we asked people which ones were their favorite and played it, it made the pulse rate go up,” she said.

Zachery Crowell ordered ants from Utah for his experiment to determine if they really would eat a picnic. His feast for them included lemon, salt Pollock, pineapple, lettuce and roast.

“They will go after sugary things,” said Crowell.

“Eighteen went to the pineapple, two went on the roast. A lot went to the water on the lettuce because they were thirsty after the long trip They never even looked at the lemon and pollock.”

Winners of the science fair are listed below. They will go on to compete at the Tri-County Regional Science & Technology Expo on Wednesday, March 26 at NSCC Burridge Campus in Yarmouth. The event will be open to the public at 10 a.m.
