Mariners drop final game of regular season
Playoffs expected to begin March 8 for Mariners
The Halifax Wolverines (18-33-5-2) dumped the Yarmouth Mariners (42-12-3-1) 5-2 Tuesday in Bridgewater in each team's final game of the MJAHL regular season.
Matt Binnington and Matt Snow led Halifax with two goals each.
Binnington opened the scoring 21 seconds into the first period to give the Wolverines an early 1-0 lead. Cody Lefrancois scored at 7:44 to tie the game 1-1. Mark Rogers (unassisted) scored at 11:12 to regain the lead for Halifax at 2-1. Matt Snow (game winner) scored at 13:02 to extend the lead to 3-1 after the first period. There was no second period scoring. Ryan Penney scored at 10:42 to cut the lead to one goal at 3-2 until Binnington (powerplay, second goal of game) added an insurance marker at 15:33 to increase the lead to 4-2. Snow (unassisted empty net) rounded out the scoring at 19:30.
Halifax went 1 for 5 on the powerplay while Yarmouth went 0 for 7.
T.J. Keeping stopped 51 of 53 shots for the win while Jocelyn Morrissette stopped 44 of 48 shots in the loss.
The Mariners, who won the regular season league title, will now wait to face the winner of the Halifax-Amherst mini series. Yarmouth's first game is expected to be March 8.
