Theft of autos, suspicious weapons and damage to vehicles
Yarmouth Town RCMP report
During the period of Feb. 1-17, the town detachment of the RCMP responded to 141 calls for service. This included: three causing a disturbance, 17 false alarms, three noise complaints, four drunk in a public place, three Mental Health Act investigations, two business break and enters, seven assaults, 13 mischief/property damage, eight traffic collisions, eight 911 hang-ups, five theft under $5,000, two theft of autos, three shoplifting and 11 other Criminal Code.
The following is a list of some of the calls the detachment responded to.
•Feb. 3, 1 a.m., officers responded to a complaint of an assault with a weapon, the weapon was a piece of wood. A victim had to be treated at the Yarmouth Regional Hospital for injuries. The RCMP says the parties involved were known to one another. No charges had been laid as of last week but police had a suspect. The matter is still under investigation.
•Feb. 4, 1:09 a.m., received a call from Elm Street of an attempted theft of a satellite dish. The complainant said someone had tried to steal the satellite dish off of the side of his residence, wires had been cut.
•Feb. 4, 6:29 a.m., received a call from Huntington Street that during the overnight/early morning hours someone had torn off the passenger side mirror of their vehicle.
•Feb. 4, 7:38 a.m., received a complaint from Chestnut Street of property damage overnight. A mirror had been broken off a vehicle and a house number had been taken off of a house. (The detachment notes that on this same date in a two-block radius in the north end of town, there were four incidents of property damage overnight.)
•Feb. 5, 8:59 a.m., the detachment received a call that a two or three-year-old girl that had been located on Kirk Street. The youngster had been taken in by a business. An immediate patrol was made and the police were able to determine who the girl’s relatives were. Family and Children Services was contacted and the girl was turned over to the agency.
•Feb. 7, 9 p.m., received a call from the south end of town of suspicious activity involving two youths in an apartment. The caller said it looked as if a rifle was being pointed from the second storey of the building. Officers attended and found two boys who had been playing with a paint-ball gun. The boys were spoken to at length, with parents present, of the dangers of playing with something that could be perceived to be a firearm.
•Feb. 8, 9:55 a.m., responded to a traffic collision at Starrs Road and Brooklyn Street, two vehicles involved, no injuries, one driver charged for failing to stop at a red light.
•Feb. 9, 9 a.m., received a complaint of suspicious activity in the Wal-Mart parking lot involving a male carrying a possible handgun. Officers attended, located a vehicle and discovered that the occupants had a pellet gun. The pellet gun looked very much like a handgun. The officers explained the consequences of having a pellet gun in public.
•Feb. 9, 10:56 p.m., officers responded to a 911 call of a collision on Starrs Road. A truck had run into the Shell station, broken a window and damaged a pillar and the canopy. No injuries.
•Feb. 11, 6:25 a.m., while on patrol officers noticed a parked car at the south end of Water Street, felt it was suspicious. As the officers attempted the pull up to the vehicle the driver tried to pull away. The vehicle turned out to be stolen. A 17-year-old from outside the province was charged and will appear in court shortly.
•Feb. 12, 3:09 a.m., officers responded to an alarm at Octane Auto Sales on Starrs Road. It was determined that a break and enter and theft of money had occurred at the business.
•Feb. 12, 9:55 a.m., officers responded to a 911 hang-up call. It was determined the homeowner’s son must have hit speed dial as the 911 was preprogrammed in the phone. The police note programming 911 in speed dial is illegal under the 911 Act.
•Feb. 15, 1:56 a.m., received a 911 call of a mischief complaint on Highway 1 in Wellington. Males had been reported to have gotten out of a vehicle and were breaking the windows of other vehicles at the Wellington auto body shop. The vehicle was headed back in the direction of town. The caller gave the police a description. Officers from the town detachment located the vehicle on Main Street, questioned the occupants and arrested one male who will appear in court on April 22.
•Feb. 17, 5:30 a.m., while on patrol an officer located a vehicle that was parked on Carleton Street that matched a description of a stolen vehicle from outside the county. Officers approached the vehicle and located a male occupant who was arrested and has been charged with theft of auto.
