Windsor fans shocked as wrestlers announce steel cage match for April

Hants County wrestling fans can forget about Wrestlemania, because one of the most spectacular specialty matches ever invented is about to unfold in their own back yard. For the first time, a steel cage match will take place in Windsor, this April.

The build-up to the match all unfolded this past Friday night, Feb. 22, when MainStream Wrestling Entertainment (MSW) presented their first show of the 2008 season at the War Memorial Community Centre in Windsor.

Atlantic Canadian Champion Sidewalk Sam was defending his championship against the four-time former champion “X-Ray” Kyle Kruze. Kruze was able to fend off repeated attempts at blatant outside interference from Sam’s manager, Papi, behind the back of referee Storm MacDonald. However, Kruze met his demise when “Lumber” Jack Johnson interfered, throwing his two-by-four, “Woody”, into the ring for Sam to use as a weapon against Kruze.

This action drew the ire of the fans at ringside, not to mention that of “Kowboy” Mike Hughes, a former World Wrestling Entertainment performer, a national TV star on The Fight Network and a long-time Maritime main-eventer. Hughes ran to ringside and ran off Sam, Papi and Johnson. He and Kruze then issued a challenge to the duo of Sam and Johnson to square off in a tag-team challenge match in the main event. Sam and Johnson accepted the challenge.

When it came time for the main event, ring announcer “Captain” Kirk Starratt introduced the team of Johnson and Sam, accompanied by Papi. Apparently a bit parched from his announcing duties, Starratt left the ring to get a drink of water off the timekeeper’s table.

Responded to bullying

As Johnson walked past, he grabbed the bottle of water away from Starratt, took a drink and proceeded to empty the remaining liquid over Starratt’s head.

Hughes and Kruze did not take kindly to this act of bullying, rushing the ringside area and pummeling the team of Johnson and Sam before the bell even rang to officially begin the contest.

Eventually, the action spilled back into the ring and the match began. In the end, it was Hughes and Kruze who had their hands raised in victory. However, they hadn’t had nearly enough and challenged Sam and Johnson to a steel cage match when MSW returns to Windsor in April. A huge roar of approval went up from the fans in attendance. Although the exact date has yet to be set, all parties have agreed to the match.

Kruze said the deal would finally be sealed when MSW returns to Windsor in April and everything would finally be coming to a head.

Hughes said the people of Windsor thought they’d seen it all in the past, with flaming-tables matches and hard-core matches, but now they’d get to see the granddaddy of them all, a steel cage match.

“You guys have to step into the ring with two of the best ever to compete in the Maritimes,” Hughes told Sam and Johnson.

In other action, Maritime Menace defeated Killer Bee and “Iron Tiger” Mike Frasier defeated Johnny “Scotia” Colon.
