Mariners double Bearcats, win division title

The Yarmouth Mariners (41-10-3-1) doubled the Truro Bearcats (35-11-5-4) 6-3 Friday night in Yarmouth.

With the win, the Mariners are the Bent Division regular season champions as the Bearcats cannot overtake them for first place.

Ryan Penney and Itan Chavira led the Mariners with two goals each while Steve Pearson tallied three assists.

Penney (powerplay) opened the scoring 51 seconds into the game to give Yarmouth an early 1-0 lead. Penney (powerplay, second goal of game) scored at 10:55 to extend the lead to 2-0. Cody Lefrancois scored 30 seconds later at 11:25 to increase the lead to 3-0. Ryan Neaves (powerplay) scored 48 seconds after that at 12:13 to cut the lead to 3-1 after the first period. Mike Withrow (powerplay) scored 10 seconds into the start of the middle frame to move to within a goal at 3-2. Brendon MacDonald (powerplay, game winner) scored at 13:19 to restore the 2 goal lead a 4-2. Chavira scored at 16:25 to up the lead to 5-2 after the second period. Lee Davidson (unassisted) scored at 12:51 to make the score 5-3 Yarmouth. Chavira (second goal of game) rounded out the scoring at 14:45.

Yarmouth went 3 for 5 on the powerplay while Truro went 2 for 3.

Dallas Ungurian stopped 26 of 29 shots for the win while Pierre Alexandre Marion stopped 25 of 31 shots in the loss.
