A special service in honour of firefighters and the women’s auxiliary will be held at the South Side Baptist Church on Sunday, Feb. 24 at 7 p.m.
Pastor Shaun Hatfield says its time these groups were recognized for the sacrifices they make.

“These people devote a huge chunk of their lives to saving lives and protecting property in our community,” he said.

“Some of them have been serving for 40 years and that’s more than half of a lifetime.”

Hatfield has put together a power point show which features several hundred slides of firefighting footage as well as some local shots, and scans of newspaper clippings that were given to him by residents.

Several volunteers are also decorating the church with firefighting gear and department relics. Refreshments will be served after the service.

Although local fire departments are the focus of the evening Hatfield says the service has relevance for all women’s auxiliary departments and those who fight fires.

“It’s certainly an open invitation to all people who are involved in firefighting,” he said.

In 2002 the Clark’s Harbour, South Side and Barrington Passage fire departments amalgamated into the Island & Barrington Passage Fire Department.

“The time has come to acknowledge the valuable contribution these people make to our community. We’ll also add some prayers for their safety and protection and for their families as well,” said Hatfield.

All fire fighters, auxiliary members, and community members are welcome to join this service of recognition and appreciation. For more info call Hatfield at 902-745-3487.
