Windsor Winter Carnival promises to be huge this year

Windsor is promising to host one of the best Winter Carnivals in years. Recreation programmer Jim Lambert says that staff and volunteers really pulled together to make the four-day event something all residents can enjoy. “Windsor Recreation has been actively working to revitalize the Winter Carnival and make it accessible for everyone,” Lambert said.

This year the board encouraged collaboration from the community including seniors, businesses, service clubs and town staff, he noted. “Our objective was to make this a community effort...”

The usual fun winter activities such as the Snow Sculpture Extravaganza, free skates and Scavenger Hunt are on the docket, and by involving the whole community some new events have been added. Thursday evening, the Spitfire Arms will host a jam session, the Hockey Heritage Society will host their Family Fun Bash on the ice at Elmcroft Park Sunday afternoon, and the Windsor Curling Club will put a unique spin on the Queen of Hearts Pageant Saturday evening.

There will also more activities for seniors, including cribbage and 45’s tournaments, bowling and luncheons.

There will be many family-focused activities, and dancing for both teens and adults. The icing on the cake, of course, will be bundling up to watch the fireworks Friday night.

Town Tourism and Community Development coordinator Vanessa Roberts said the fabulous schedule wouldn’t be possible without strong partnerships. “This time, many different groups got involved to create a very family-orientated event. We’re really just the umbrella, and creating the opportunity. But we’d like to see the community take charge of their carnival and make it something they’ve created.

Lambert said wouldn’t have been easy without cooperation at all levels. From the Fire Department and Public Works, who made an outdoor skating rink a reality, to local businesses hosting events throughout the week.

“I say, ‘hats off to everyone,’” said Lambert. “I’m just blown away by the effort every department in town has put in to make this carnival a success.”
