Christian school calls it quits

The “for sale” sign is going up and long-time supporters of the Kings County Christian School in Cambridge are “settled” they’ve made the right decision to close and sell the operation.

Jack Enserink, school board chairman, says the decision has been made to sell the building after the school didn’t open for classes in September.

“We could have held out until next year, but it doesn’t look like there’s interest.”

The non-profit organization behind the school considered alternatives through the fall, but selling the property and its assets is the only option now.

Thirty children attended the school in 2006/ 2007 - the school’s 30th anniversary - in grades primary through eight, and numbers would have been lower this year.

Enserink said close to 20 people attended the final board meeting and agreed on the decision to sell, and resources are being sold now.

“The society’s bylaws call for any money from the sale of the property or assets to go to like-minded agencies,” and he cited Special Olympics as just one early beneficiary of some of the school’s materials and equipment.

Much of the school’s Christian curriculum material is being offered to other Christian schools, and Enserink says the group would be willing to help other groups.

“They’re more than welcome to call me (678-6981) and, if the board feels they fit, we’d have no problem helping.”

Enserink says there have already been early inquiries for the property itself, a large lot on Highway 1 zoned institutional but with a number of options for development.
