A homeowner suffered minor burns to his face and a firefighter incurred heat exhaustion in a house fire in South Scott’s Bay Sunday morning, Jan. 20.
Canning Fire Department Deputy Chief Jeff Skaling said the call came in to firefighters as an electrical fire involving a house on Highway 358 around 9:20 a.m. Sunday morning.
Firefighters and equipment from both Canning stations responded. The first engine on the scene was a pumper from Station 2 in Scott’s Bay. That crew began fighting the fire; equipment and human resources from Station 1 in Canning arrived soon on the scene.
Mutual aid was called in from Hall’s Harbour, Port Williams, Kentville, New Minas, Greenwich and Wolfville.
Skaling said the house is still standing, but sustained heavy fire damage. The homeowner suffered minor burns to his face and was treated by paramedics at the scene. One member of the Canning Fire Department was transported to hospital suffering from heat exhaustion.
Skaling said the fire was very hot and the firefighter who suffered heat exhaustion was part of the initial internal attack team. Skaling said they decided to back the firefighters out because the blaze was so intense.
Skaling said the probable cause of the fire is electrical and the house was insured. It was a very challenging environment for firefighters because of extreme cold and wind chill values. It became a concern for both the well-being of firefighters and equipment alike, as water hoses can freeze quickly in those conditions.
