Crashes, medical assistance keep firefighters busy

Canning firefighters were kept busy last week with a number of motor vehicles crashes and calls for medical assistance.

Canning responded to a single-vehicle rollover on Highway 358 at the Look Off Friday night, Jan. 11. Department spokesperson Scott Cruickshank said there were no injuries and road conditions were terrible at the time.

Canning responded to a single-vehicle crash on Pereau Road in Delhaven Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 15. Cruickshank said one individual was transported to hospital with undetermined injuries.

Canning firefighters responded to four calls for medical assistance last week, including one on Highway 221 in Pereau the night of Jan. 11; one on Woodside Road in Woodside Sunday morning, Jan. 13; one on Main Street, Canning that afternoon, and one on Highway 221 in Habitant the night of Jan. 15.

Greenwich Fire Chief Randy Schofield said his department responded to a call about downed power lines on the White Rock Ridge Road just up the hill from the lumber mill the night of Jan. 11. It was the department’s first call for assistance in 2008.

Kentville firefighters responded to a single-vehicle crash in Coldbrook Monday, Jan. 14. Department spokesperson Ian Fairclough said there were no injuries and firefighters were turned around before arriving at the scene.

Kentville firefighters responded to a call about a smell of smoke at the EHS paramedics’ base on Aberdeen Street Jan. 15. Fairclough said the smell was apparently caused by a problem with an electrical panel.

The department responded to a truck fire on West Main Street Wednesday, Jan. 16. Fairclough said someone noticed smoke coming from the vehicle but there was no fire burning when firefighters arrived.

Kentville firefighters responded to a car fire on Belcher Street Thursday, Jan. 17. Fairclough said the vehicle was destroyed in the blaze.

About an hour later, Kentville responded to a two-vehicle collision in Coldbrook. Fairclough said firefighters were called to deal with gas leaking from one of the vehicles.
