The military men and women of 14 Wing Greenwood will be looking for the top man in a cowboy hat to lead their morale for the next three years.
The Valley base will bestow an honorary colonelship on Nova Scotia’s country music singer George Canyon February 21.
“A lot of the bases and wings ask an individual to represent them, and george was here last fall and gave us a concert,” says 14 Wing spokesman Captain Scott Spurr.
“We’re quite thrilled and happy he’s accepted.”
Canyon’s appointment comes from Defence Minister Peter MacKay, and requires Canyon to develop strong ties with the base, including its personnel and their work and community programs.
“We’ll have an official ceremony to solidify the position, we’ll likely give him and his family a tour of the base so he can meet the men and women of the wing - and we’ll have to wait and see if there’s a song coming,” Spurr says.
Canyon will be welcome at the base for different ceremonies and functions over the next three years and Spurr added 2009, mid-way through Canyon’s term, is the centennial of flight, and many activities are already in the works as part of the celebration.
