Cecil Roy is giving it another try.
Disappointed that an event he initiated last year for veterans drew just a few people, the Yarmouth resident and Korean War vet is planning a follow-up activity and is looking to have it in early spring.
He invites all veterans to join him for a noon-hour meal at Wilson’s Restaurant and he is eyeing the first Saturday in April to hold it, saying he would rather wait until then, when the wintry weather hopefully will be over.
The idea is to have an informal gathering where vets can chat and enjoy themselves, he says.
Upset over last year’s poor turnout, Roy says those who were there nevertheless seemed to have a good time and he hopes more vets will take advantage of this opportunity to get together.
It seems more of them will, if what Roy has been hearing from people is any indication.
“I’ve been asked by different people to try it again so I hope it’s going to work,” he said.
Although there was some advance publicity for the first event, Roy says he heard afterwards from people who said they would have attended but didn’t know about it.
It remains Roy’s hope that getting some veterans to come out for a meal might lead to gatherings that might take place once or twice a month or however often the vets want.
Referring to such sessions he used to attend in Digby, he says that group consisted of 20 to 25 people or so and that they would meet in different places.
As for the next Yarmouth event, meanwhile, Roy notes that while participants will have to pay for their meal, they don’t have to worry about paying dues or signing up for a club or anything like that. The purpose, he says, is just to give vets a chance to spend a little time together.
Roy asks anyone interested in attending to get in touch with him (742-4419).
