A surprisingly young-sounding voice could answer the phone if you call the Evelyn Richardson Memorial Elementary School at noon.
ERMES principal Mary Manning says at least 20 students are participating in the Student Secretary program this year.
“We thought it was much better to have a real voice answering the phone at noon than a recording,” she said.
The students received a training program on phone etiquette and learned the importance of confidentiality and privacy.
Other duties they perform include making announcements over the PA system, making photocopies, greeting visitors, stapling and changing notices on the bulletin board. Staff is nearby if they need assistance with any of their responsibilities.
“They’re doing an excellent, bang-up job,” said Manning of the students.
“Our secretary really appreciates being able to eat her lunch without having to jump up.”
