Curtola company pays taxes on undeveloped condominium site – Mayor
Controversial media reports stating a condominium development corporation linked to singer Bobby Curtola is exempt from paying taxes on what is known in Liverpool as Shipyard Point are completely untrue, says Region of Queens Municipality Mayor John Leefe.
He said this isn’t permitted under the Municipal Government Act.
Venila Development Corp., of which former Liverpool resident and well-known singer Bobby Curtola is a director, purchased the land in 2006 from the municipality in order to develop at least 30 condominium units.
Mayor Leefe says, “There have been some interesting comments (from residents). Fortunately, most people who have spoken to me prefaced their remarks by saying ‘I can’t believe this.’ My answer to this is: Why should you?”
Curtola moved to Alberta last month and, also according to Mayor Leefe, hadn’t at deadline contacted the municipality about the company’s plans for the site.
However, it is paying taxes on a property assessed at a little over $200,000, Mayor Leefe said, not $1.1-million as also reported in the print and broadcast media (but not The Queens County Advance.)
Mayor Leefe said Assessment Division officials from Service Nova Scotia advised him the larger figure was correct when the site housed a municipal sewage treatment plant, “which, as you know, is not there anymore.”
He added Curtola didn’t provide the municipality with his new address.
