Article and Photo Essay
It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas… everywhere you go in the Region of Queens Municipality! Communities from throughout Queens have worked together to decorate Christmas trees for the annual Community Christmas Tree Contest sponsored by the Region’s Recreation and Community Facilities Department.
Eight communities took part in the annual event, showing unmistakable creativity, community cooperation and the spirit of Christmas.
Residents are encouraged to take a tour of the trees, and take in the cooperative efforts in each community. Traveling throughout the Region, viewing the beautiful trees, decorations and the pretty lights is a great way to get in the holiday mood! The level of community involvement from throughout Queens was overwhelming, with participation from all corners of the Region.
The community of Port Medway won first place honours with a natural Christmas theme on a lovely thick tree festooned with dried apple and orange slices, pinecones, and strung with cranberries. The judges felt the uniformity of theme, well shaped tree, central location in the village, environmental interest (use of LED lights and the ecological nature of the decorations), and the team work of the community made this tree their number one choice. It is located on the corner of Port Medway Road and Commercial Street, beside the Farmers Medway Market.
Brooklyn and the North Queens Nursing Home share second place honours. Brooklyn’s traditional themed tree was a nearly perfectly shaped, thick and full, decked out with energy efficient LED lights, and covered in handmade ornaments made by local children in the shapes of Christmas stockings, snowmen, stars, wreaths and more. It is located in front of the Brooklyn Community Hall in Brooklyn.
Sharing the second place honours is the North Queens Nursing home with their red and white, winter themed tree. The tree features energy efficient LED lights, wooden ornaments in the shapes of snowflakes and cardinals hand painted by the residents, beaded icicles also crafted by the residents, and adorned with red bows. A small herd of lighted reindeer is grazing near the tree. The tree is located near the entrance of the North Queens Nursing Home in Caledonia.
“Reduce, Reuse, Rejoice” was the theme of the third place tree, decorated by the community of Kempt. The nearly perfect shaped tree is decorated with handmade wooden cut outs of gingerbread men, candy canes, and other candies, large red bows with brass jingle bells, and adorned with the ecological low energy LED lights, coupled with large wooden cut outs of a sleigh filled with presents and a group of carolers assembled in front of the tree. It is located in the Square, just past the Kempt Community Hall on Route 8.
The Communities of East Port L’Hebert, Port Joli, North Brookfield, and Greenfield also decorated beautiful Christmas trees this year.
