PHOTO ESSAY: Summer start to fall fishery
A look back at fisheries news in 2007
As the year 2007 draws to a close, we look back at some images from the past year, including this look back at the summer start to the fall lobster fishery.
The weather delayed the start of the fall lobster fishery in Lobster Fishing Area 25, which stretches from Victoria to North Cape in the Northumberland Strait.
Initially the season had been slated to start Aug. 9, but high winds from the northwest meant fishermen from Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia involved in the fall fishery had to wait before venturing out to set their traps.
And because the traps were only dumped on Saturday, Aug. 11, it meant they had to wait until Monday, Aug. 13 to haul up their first catches.
Fishermen took the delay in stride. The missed time on the water was added to the end of the season in October.
Prior to the start of the season, Sou’Wester editor Tina Comeau turned her camera lenses on the wharf at Egmont Bay, P.E.I. where fishermen prepared their boats and traps for the start of the fishery, whenever it came.
