Organizers of Kingston’s 50th anniversary celebrations are hoping to create a “season’s sensation” by hosting the village’s inaugural holiday home decorating contest.

Committee member Muriel Craig says the idea behind the contest is to encourage people living within the village’s boundaries to celebrate the holidays and the village’s 50th anniversary milestone.

“We hope people will get involved and give the village a really special look for the holidays this year,” says Craig.

Prizes will be awarded in three categories. Entries will be judged as the “most elegant, most creative or most brilliant.” One winner will be announced in each group and the prize for each is a cash award of $150.

“When the committee discussed how to judge entries, we agreed styles of decorating can be a bit like apples and oranges. This way, people can do the theme that suits them best and their efforts will judged along side similar entries,” says Craig.

Nomination forms can be picked up at the village office and deadline for entries is December 17. Residents are invited to nominate their own or someone else’s property, and all nominees will be contacted by the anniversary committee to confirm participation in the contest.

Judging will take place December 19 and 20, with results announced December 21. The host committee will place a decorative display outside the three winning properties to bring attention to the contest results.
