Fire department has many up-coming events
PRE CHRISTMAS EVENTS



The YFD Auxiliary is hosting their annual craft sale at the Yarmouth fire hall on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 1 and 2. Doors open at 9 a.m., the sale running until 4:30 p.m. There are still a few tables available. Contact Wendy at 742-1350.



LAKE VAUGHAN FOOD DRIVE



The Yarmouth Food Bank will be the recipient of a food drive by the Lake Vaughan Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary on Dec. 3. Drop off time is from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at their fire hall. More info can be obtained by phoning 648-3393.



ST. GEORGE CHRISTMAS PARTY



Monday, Dec. 10, at the Queen Street youth center. Doors open at 6 p.m.



YFD WILD GAME SUPPER



Friday, Dec. 14, at the Yarmouth fire hall. $7 per member or veteran. Happy hour 6 p.m., supper 7 p.m.



YFD CHRISTMAS PARTY



Sunday, Dec. 16 - 2 - 4 p.m. for members’ children, grandchildren and great grand children.



HAPPY BIRTHDAY



Naiad veteran, and former town firefighter Jim McRae will celebrate his 90th birthday on Wednesday, Nov. 28. Many happy returns and continued good health.



BOWLING RESULTS



West Pubnico - 8 pts, Wedgeport 8 - Ladies 0, Carleton #2 8 - Neptune 0, Carleton 7 - East Pubnico 1, Naiad 6 - Salmon River 2.

Standings: Wedgeport - 68, Naiad - 62, East Pubnico - 55, Carleton #1 - 55, Carleton #2 - 48, West Pubnico - 40, Salmon River 38, Ladies - 24, Neptune - 10.



NEW MEMBERS



The Yarmouth department welcomed Robert Baird to its ranks at an earlier meeting. Robert has had some experience with the Truro Fire Department.

We would also like to mention that Surette's Island Fire Department now has a female member in its ranks.



RIBBON CUTTING HIGHLIGHTS REOPENING



MP Robert Thibeau, MLA Chris D'entremont, and Argyle Warden Aldric D'entremont cut three red ribbons at the official reopening of the Islands and District fire hall. After just one year the department is ready and able to respond to fires.



FIRE PREVENTION REPORT



Special certificates were handed out to the members of YFD who participated in the annual fire prevention program. Area schools were visited and a display was set up in the Yarmouth Mall; and of course "Sparky" was there. Chairman Blair Deveau who logged better than 70 hours helped six volunteers attend functions bettering at least 270 hours. Jim Watkins - 60 hours, Stewart Deveau - 49 1/2 hours, Oliver Gascoigne - 46 1/2 hours, Jim McRae 20 1/2 hours, Peter Winship - 14 1/2 hours and Martin Doucette - four hours. A job well done.



FFM DISPLAY



1840 Hunneman Hand Engines (two)



September, 1840 two identical fire engines arrived in Yarmouth. One used by St. George #1 until traded in 1849. The other by Naiad Engine Co. Yarmouth North. It was sold to Port Maitland when a Silsy Steamer was purchased.

Note: William C. Hunneman, an apprentice of Paul Revere developed this style of end stroke engines, which became extremely popular and hundreds were built. These two can be seen on the second floor of the Firefighters’ Museum.



SMILE FOR THE WEEK



A young boy called his grandfather to ask how old he was. Grandpa answered "62". Quiet for a moment the youngster then asked, "Did you start at 1?"
