Wolfville’s competitive female firefighters just finished a successful week at the world championships in Las Vegas.

Proud Fire Chief Tim MacLeod says, “the ladies continue to better their standings every year.”

In the relay portion, the Wolfville women placed fifth overall - the fastest volunteer team.

In individual competition, Kathy Babcooke placed third overall and continues to be the world’s fastest volunteer.

“After we arrived in Las Vegas, Melanie (Edwards) and Kathy decided to enter the tandem category as well,” said MacLeod. “They were ranked first going in to the final round but, in an exciting and close race during the 165-pound dummy drag, Melanie fell 60 feet from bringing home a world championship ring.”

MacLeod says the Wolfville women look better in the rankings if you realize they have to fit family, work and firefighting in.

“The professionals train on the job.”

According to MacLeod, it was a great week of competitions.

“The times in all categories were fast and several new records were set. The number of competitors was also a record, with firefighters coming from the U.S., Canada, Germany, New Zealand and South Africa.”

He added the course was set up in “downtown Las Vegas on Fremont Street - and that was an interesting experience in itself.”
