Fire department responds to boat fire

Fire aboard the stern dragger Fundy Commander

Which was tied up at the old public wharf caused heat, smoke and fire damage to the starboard side of the vessel last Thursday afternoon.

Firefighters were able to knock the fire down quickly with several water and foam lines. Engine 1 laid a feed line from Water Street to back up Engine 4. No crew members were aboard at the time of the 4:11 outbreak.

Islands and District Celebrate Re-opening

Just short of one year the Islands and District (Surette's Island) volunteer fire department will celebrate their re-opening with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Saturday, November 17 from 1 pm to 4 pm. On the evening of November 13, 2006 the fire station and equipment were badly damaged and some equipment lost in a fire. Many organizations rallied together to help this department get back in service for which they are all very grateful. Firefighters and the public are welcomed to witness this event. Islands and District Fire Chief is John F. Surette.

Halloween Party

Thirty-two kids of all ages enjoyed the Halloween party at the Yarmouth fire hall last Sunday, Oct. 28. The children, grand children and even a great grand child all dressed in costumes enjoyed games, sweets, hotdogs, pop, chips and cheesies which was hosted by the YFD auxiliary.

Barn Fire

Very little damage occurred at a barn fire on Green Street near Lewis Avenue on Tuesday Oct. 30. Engine 4 was quickly on the scene at 5:07 p.m. Followed up by Engine 1 and other apparatus. The small blaze was thought to have been set deliberately. A nearby vacant house was not in danger. The RCMP are investigating.

Bowling

Wedgeport crept closer to league leaders Naiad when they defeated them 6 points to 2. This left the standings showing Naiad 46, Wedgeport 44, East Pubnico 40, Salmon River, Carleton #2 and Carleton all tied at 32, Ladies 20, West Pubnico 16, Neptune 10. Hank Nickerson rolled a nice 152 single and a 390 triple.

Date in History

November 6, 2002 a 3:06 a.m. fire destroyed a barn on Vancouver Street. Engines 1 and 3, using 3 1 1/2" lines, were able to keep flames from a nearby house. The R.C.M.P. investigated the ruins after the department left the scene at 5 a.m.

Time to Change Batteries

Remember to change your batteries in your smoke detectors when you change your clocks. Time changed last Saturday Nov. 3.

1935 Chev Bickle Pumper

Originally used in Liverpool by Mill Village. This pumper has a 45 gallon booster tank and hose. Visitors to the museum are allowed to sit in the driver's seat and have their picture taken.

Nov. 11

Again on this date we pause to remember those who gave their lives in wars so that we can enjoy our lives in this great country. Sunday at the eleventh hour, the eleventh day and the eleventh month, lets all take a few minutes to honor these heroes.

Lake Vaughn Food Drive

The Lake Vaughn Fire Department Auxiliary are sponsoring a community food bank drive, Dec. 3, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Food donations should be dropped off at the Lake Vaughn fire hall.
