Funds are being sought to repair the Seal Island Church, which was severely damaged by lightning on Sept. 9.

Claire Newell, president of the Seal Island Church Society approached the Municipality of Barrington for assistance at their last council meeting.

“We had just raised funds to shingle a side of the church and put three windows in and that depleted our funds,” said Newell.

“When this happened we were back to square one.”

Seal Island is in the Municipality of Argyle but they do not have a policy of contributing to churches. Newell is hoping they will reconsider as the church is not a “working church” and has more of a historical value.

She estimates that 90 per cent of visitors to the building are from the municipality of Barrington, with the remaining from Clark’s Harbour. The Town of Clark’s Harbour is contributing $500 towards repairs and will revisit the appeal next year.

Newell’s request was referred to the next committee of the whole meeting.
