A Kingsport man has been sentenced for impaired driving causing death. The court handed Kai Johannes Weiler, 20, Kingsport, a conditional sentence order for having care or control of a motor vehicle while his ability to operate a motor vehicle was impaired by alcohol, thereby causing the death of Cory Keith Chapman.
Weiler entered a guilty plea to the charge Aug. 27, 2007. The matter was adjourned to Oct. 24, 2007 to allow time for a pre-sentence report to be prepared and for sentencing.
Judge Claudine MacDonald imposed on Weiler a conditional sentence order Oct. 24, including two years less a day in custody, 240 hours of community service work to be completed by Oct. 24, 2008 followed by one-year of probation.
The court imposed a five-year, Canada-wide driving prohibition against Weiler and granted a DNA order, meaning he must provide a sample of his DNA.
The incident occurred in Steam Mill May 18, 2007. A blood sample showed that Weiler’s blood-alcohol level at the time of the motor vehicle crash causing Chapman’s death was in excess of the legal limit of 80 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood.
