Firefighters respond to HAZMAT call

Local firefighters involved with the Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) team were called to Lakeville last week to clean up a fluid spill.
Kentville Fire Chief Shawn Ripley said a dump truck left the road beside Silver Lake and rolled over Monday, Oct. 8, resulting in a hydraulic fluid spill. Firefighters from Kentville, New Minas and Wolfville involved in the HAZMAT team responded.
Kentville responded to a smoke alarm sounding on Pleasant Street in north Kentville Friday evening, Oct. 5.
Ripley said Kentville firefighters responded to a turkey manure fire in Northville Saturday afternoon, Oct. 6. The Canning Fire Department responded in mutual aid, sending a tanker and pumper to the scene.
Kentville responded to the scene of a half-ton truck fire on Carmen Drive Sunday morning, Oct. 7 at around 3 a.m. Ripley said the truck burned up in the blaze.
Kentville firefighters responded to a false fire alarm sounding at Eastern Protein Wednesday, Oct. 10.
Kentville responded to a single-vehicle rollover on English Mountain Road in Coldbrook Thursday, Oct. 11. Ripley said a female was transported to hospital with undetermined injuries.
Canning Fire Department spokesperson Scott Cruickshank said his department put on displays and presentations in recognition of Fire Prevention Week at Glooscap Elementary School Tuesday, Oct. 9. Students were taught home fire safety with the use of a “smoke house”, a specially equipped trailer belonging to the Windsor Fire Department used for educational purposes. Canning held an open house at their fire hall Wednesday evening, Oct. 10. Cruickshank said the event was well attended.
