Last week was another busy period for Kentville firefighters, including calls to assist with motor vehicle collisions, rescuing a man pinned under a lawn tractor, brush fires and various other emergencies.
Chief Shawn Ripley said firefighters responded to a false alarm sounding at Sarsfield’s in the Kentville Industrial Park Friday, Sept. 28. A forklift striking and breaking a sprinkler apparently caused the alarm.
Kentville responded to a two-vehicle collision at Casey’s Corner on Highway 12 Saturday afternoon, Sept. 29. Ripley said there were no injuries, and firefighters were turned around at the scene.
Kentville firefighters assisted at the scene of a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Highway 359 and Highway 221 in Centreville the night of Sept. 29. Ripley said the Kentville Police were apparently pursuing a car, trying to get the driver to stop but the driver refused.
The car struck a van in the intersection and the male driver of the car fled the scene, leaving a female passenger behind.
Ripley said the driver of the van that was struck was not seriously injured but was shaken up and the car that struck the van was a write-off.
Kentville Police Chief Mark Mander could not be reached for comment prior to press time.
Kentville responded to a small brush fire off Acadia Drive Monday, Oct. 1. Ripley said firefighters extinguished the fire after a neighbour complained about the smoke.
Ripley said Kentville firefighters provided medical assistance in front of their own fire hall Oct. 1 after a young fellow on roller blades wiped out there.
Kentville provided lift assistance to paramedics in north Kentville Tuesday, Oct. 2.
Kentville firefighters responded to what Ripley described as a suspicious brush fire beside Aldershot Elementary School around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3.
Kentville responded to the scene of a man pinned under a lawn tractor on Lakewood Road in Steam Mill Wednesday evening.
Ripley said the man apparently rolled the lawn tractor and became trapped underneath. Firefighters were able to get the lawn tractor off the man and assisted EHS paramedics at the scene. The man was transported to hospital with undetermined injuries. Firefighters were on the scene for about two hours.
Kentville responded to a fire alarm sounding on Isnor Drive Thursday morning, Oct. 4 at around 9 a.m. that turned out to be a small kitchen fire. Ripley said a woman apparently turned on the wrong burner and caught some combustibles on fire. The kitchen floor was burned as a result of the fire.
Ripley said firefighters would be involved in Fire Prevention Week activities at local schools this week. This year’s theme is “Plan Your Escape” and people are urged to plan and practice their escape route and make sure smoke detectors are functional and have fresh batteries.
Canning firefighters responded to a call for medical assistance on Summer Street, Canning, the morning of Oct. 1.
Other fire departments in eastern Kings County had a relatively quiet week with no major calls for assistance being reported.
