Digby Tiger U16 boys pounded out a convincing 3-0 win over West Hants for the Tigers home opener.

The two teams shared possession, running a pretty even duel at midfield, but Digby made much more of their time with the ball – pushing the pace and attacking the West Hants net.

Nathan Janson opened the scoring late in the first half on a great second effort.

He had run down a long pass up the middle, but was hammered hard by the West Hants defence near the penalty spot. Janson kept his feet, out hustled two defenders for the ball, turned and knocked the ball between the defenders and out of reach of the diving goalie.

Digby kept the pressure on in the second, hitting the crossbar, and then the uprights and sending another good chance just wide.

Brody Merritt made it 2-0 at the midpoint of the second. A West Hants defender got a foot on the ball as Merritt stepped into the 18-yard box – the ball bounced up, Merritt hit the ball full on the volley and past the surprised West Hants keeper.

Digby goalie Riley LeBlanc was hardly tested – he cut off several long lead passes before they could become dangerous and otherwise his defence only gave West Hants two good looks at the Digby net. LeBlanc was solid on both chances.

After another series of missed chances for Digby, Dawson Acker cracked one bar down, as they say in hockey, to finish the scoring.

The win boosts the U16 boys’ record to 2-1. They beat Kingston Greenwood 4-1 on June 4 and lost in Bridgetown 5-2 on June 10.

They play again next in Kentville on July 1 and are back home at the DRHS field on July 10, hosting East Kings to a 7:15 p.m. start.
