The Bad Aibling Fireballs will have two Duinkers playing for them this coming season.

Recent Acadia graduate and Cambridge native Abbey Duinker has signed a contract to play for Bad Aibling for the 2014-2015 season. In doing so, she joins her sister Emma, who played for the German professional team last season, her second in the German league.

“I signed a contract three days ago,” Abbey said July 15 during a break in the Axewomen summer basketball camp, where she is working as an instructor.

She described the opportunity of playing professionally as “super exciting. I’m really looking forward to it.”

Emma Duinker graduated from Acadia in 2012, after playing five years with the Axewomen. The 2011-2012 season was the last time the sisters played on the same team. Prior to that, they had played two seasons together for the Horton Griffins.

“It’s been three years since I played on the same team as Emma,” Abbey said. “Hopefully, we still have the chemistry we always had. Only time will tell.”

In an email message July 18 from the U.S., where she is coaching at a basketball camp this summer, Emma said that she, too, is "super excited" to once again play with her sister.

"It's always nice to have family close by when you're so far away," she said. "I feel blessed to have been able to play with Abbey at the high school level, university level, and now the professional level."

Abbey, she said, has grown tremendously over the past couple of years, both on and off the court.

“I'm looking forward to seeing her raise her game at the next level,” she said. "I think she will fit in perfectly with our team. Her style and abilities will fill a gap that I feel we had on the team last season.”

While Emma says the first month or two might be hard for Abbey to get used to, in terms of the lifestyle, style of play and foreign atmosphere, Emma said she has confidence Abbey will settle in quickly.
