The opening weekend of 2014 saw the Avon View girls’ basketball team win the Springhill January Thaw Tournament.

In the championship game, they thumped Moncton High 65-34, as Jessie Miller, high scorer for the Avalanche in all three games they played, netted 26 points.

Their closest game of the tournament came in their second game, which was a 59-54 victory over host Springhill.

The opening game saw Avon View destroy Hants East 76-29.

Head Coach Jim Bryan spoke highly of the play for the entire team.

"Captain Haley Guild stepped up her game and provided strong leadership by example, being a force at both ends of the court,” Bryan told the Journal. “Kali McLellan was forced to play out of position for the majority of the tournament but did not look out of place, scoring key baskets and also rebounding and making defensive stops when they were desperately needed."

He noted that Tasha Williamson played an exceptional rebounding game in the five-point victory over Springhill while McKayla States “was the only point guard we had the whole weekend and she took control in the championship game with smart play."

Bryan also made mention of Sophie Parker, who “added toughness and intensity on defense” while coming up with six to eight points every game, and Leslie Greeno, who logged huge minutes while still scoring a double-double in the first two games of the tournament. Sam Swinamer scored 14 points in the Avalanche's opening game win over Hants East.

The Avalanche returned to Windsor for a home game Wednesday, Jan. 8, against the always tough Horton High Griffins. Avon View lost 81-47.
