Hants County wrestlers off to strong start this season

The 2013 wrestling season looks promising for two West Hants schools.

Teams from throughout Nova Scotia travelled to the West Hants Middle School for a season opener Dec. 14.

The West Hants Middle School finished at the top of the team standings in the junior male and female divisions, earning 25 and eight points respectively at the tournament.

Junior high competitors Jared Wile, Mitchell Dill and Tyler Caldwell finished first in their weight classes, while Tyler Leonard, Tyler Ralph, Josh Hazel, Justin Pitts and Tanner Campbell secured second in their competitions. Darien Wile claimed third place in the 58 kg category.

Amy McDade secured first in the 90-plus kg junior females competition, while Olivia Sanford placed second in the 52 kg showdown.

Avon View High School’s senior females also wrestled their way to the top of the team standings, earning 26 points as a unit. Their male counterparts finished second in their division, with 21 points to the Cobequid Education Centre’s score of 23.

Isaac Hazel, Ryan Harvey, and Sam Carr claimed first in their respective weight categories. Reiley King and Gail Greeno secured second place finishes, while Emily Douglas held on to third.

The tournament marked the start of a new wrestling season.
