The Dalbrae Academy Dragons from Cape Breton captured the NSSAF D-2 boys’ provincial hockey championship March 23 in Canning.

The provincial final between Dalbrae and the Hants East Tigers was worth the price of admission, with Dalbrae prevailing 2-1 on Ryley Keeling’s goal in the second overtime period.

That was the closest the Cape Breton school came to losing all weekend. Dalbrae set the tone right off the bat with a 4-1 win over Hants East in their opening game March 21 and ended up unbeaten for the tournament at 4-0.

Game two saw the first action for the host NKEC Titans in a replay of the Western Region final against the Barrington Barons, this time on NKEC’s home ice.

The Titans and Barons had split their games at regionals, with Barrington winning 7-1 in the round robin and NKEC prevailing 4-1 in the regional final.

At provincials, it was Barrington that had the upper hand, winning by a score of 4-2. Captain Kegin Penney had a pair of goals for Barrington, while Braden Gauthier had both NKEC goals.

Dalbrae improving to 2-0 March 21 with a 4-1 win over Barrington, dropping the Barons to 1-1. Hants East then squared its record at 1-1 with a 4-1 win over NKEC, dropping the Titans to 0-2.

The final two round robin games were played March 22, with Dalbrae scoring a 5-1 victory over NKEC and Barrington improving to 2-1 with a 3-2 squeaker over Hants East.

Dalbrae finished the round robin at 3-0, Barrington at 2-1, Hants East at 1-2 and NKEC at 0-3.

Barrington and Hants East advanced to the semifinal, with the Tigers turning the tables on the Barons by a 5-2 score to punch their ticket to the final.
