The Horton Griffins out shot and out scored the Digby Mariners to hold on to sixth place in the Valley High School Hockey League.

Cam Davidson led the Griffins with a hat trick on their way to a 6-4 win in Bridgetown Saturday night, Feb. 1.

The Digby home game was moved to Bridgetown because of mechanical troubles at the Digby rink.

Horton came out skating fast to start every period and slammed shot after shot at Digby goalie Bryceon Wade who made 48 saves on the night. Several of those were solo breakaways, two-on-nones and two-on-ones.

In the first three minutes of the game, Horton players peppered Wade with shots, slipping one through his pads that bounced off the post, they missed an open net in front and had two two-on-ones.

Lyam Curry opened the scoring, stepping over the Digby blueline and clanging one on under the crossbar and in.

Davidson’s first goal was a deflection – he knocked Eric Spooner’s shot over Wade’s shoulder.

Digby captain Myles Creighton earned an assist with some hard work backchecking along the boards. He stripped the puck, skated behind the Horton net and sent a sweet pass to Dawson Acker in front. Acker first timed it past Zac Myalls to put Digby on the scoreboard half way through the first.

Horton went ahead 3-1 a minute into the second on a goal from Ben Hewins. Bryden Dunphy got his second assist of the night on that goal.

Digby came storming back after that—Creighton again, won a face off to Myalls’s right, turned and sent one by the Griffins keeper from point blank range.

Three minutes later, once more Creighton—this time his hard shot went wide of the net but the rebound came off the boards to Bradley O’Neil in front, who tied the game.

Then a goal to excite the 75 Digby fans who made the trip to the away home game. Noah Thomas stripped the puck along the boards, raced into the Horton zone, deking one defender to get in alone on the Griffin goalie.

Coming from the right he faked a cut to the left, then skated right and tucked a forehand shot just past Myalls’s outstretched glove.

Digby leading 4-3 with 10 minutes left in the second.

Davidson tied it up to end the second.

Michael Griffin scored the winner in the third and Davidson put the icing on the cake with his third.

The Mariners, in seventh with nine points, trailed the Griffins by one heading into the match up.

The Mariners play again this evening in Bridgetown at 5 p.m., hosting the Central Kings Gators.

The Gators are in eighth place, two points behind the Mariners.
