Hockey Axemen win fourth straight, improve to 14-1-2

The beat goes on for the Acadia hockey Axemen.

The Axemen topped Saint Mary’s 5-1 Friday evening in Wolfville to win their fourth straight regular season game since before Christmas. The first-place Axemen improved to 14-1-2 on the season.

The Axemen opened the scoring on Brett Thompson’s goal after only 54 seconds of the first period. AUHC Scoring leader Liam Heelis made it 2-0 at 17:20.

Dustin Ekelman increased the lead to 3-0 Acadia at 8:59 of the second, the start of a flurry of goals. Gerrad Grant got the Huskies on the board at 9:15, Thompson made it 4-1 with his second of the game at 9:50 and Alex Beaton closed out the scoring at 11:29.

The third period was scoreless. Final shots on goal were 29-26 in favour of SMU.

Acadia’s top line of Thompson, Heelis and Cazzola had another big game. Thompson had two goals, Heelis a goal and an assist, and Cazzola three assists.

Acadia moves on to Antigonish tomorrow evening for a 7 p.m. meeting with St. F.X.
