Eric Locke accepts the J.B. Prince Trophy for winning the Digby Pines Mens Golf Club Championship from club President Greg Appejohn on Sunday, Aug. 24.

Digby’s Eric Locke is leading the qualifying tournament to make the Holland Hurricanes golf team.

Locke has already played two years with the Hurricanes and captained the team last year when they won the ACAA team title and Locke won the ACAA individual title.

“I’m really excited about Nationals this fall because I feel we are going to have the strongest Hurricanes team yet,” said Locke this week. “I can’t wait to compete against the best schools in Canada.”

At the half-way point in this year’s qualifying tournament, Locke is -4 (four under) and just one stroke ahead of Brett Wilson of Sussex. Wilson has also played two years with the Hurricanes.

The next closest player is +9 (nine over).

Twenty-eight golfers are trying out for 10 spots on the varsity team at Holland College in Charlottetown, PEI.

They’ve played four rounds over the past four days at Dundurave, Brudenell and Fox Meadow golf courses.

Locke posted scores of 69, 73, 69 and 73 while Wilson shot 76, 69, 74 and a blistering 66 in round four.

The tournament resumes this Saturday at Dundurave and Sunday at Brudenell.

The final two rounds are planned for Fox Meadow on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 13 and 14.

The top ten players will practice with the Hurricanes through the fall and winter while the coaching staff select five players to represent the Hurricanes at key tournaments including the CCAA Nationals.

Coach Blair MacPhail likes what he’s seen at the qualifier so far.

“As a part of the coaching staff I’m very glad to see the good scores so far and I’m really looking forward to taking our team to the Atlantic and National Championships, I like our chances”.
