Round Hill runner Ben Olsen used his long stride to full advantage on the muddy sandbar section of the 2014 Scallywag.

Olsen had opened up a three-minute lead before returning to dry land and kept that margin to win the third annual Scallywag in 41:43.

Olsen was also third in Digby’s other mud race, the Lobster Bash Mud Dash 3k   on July 5.

The sandbar was wider, wetter and muddier for the 2014 Scallywag 8k fun run and walk around Bear Island but that didn’t stop 71 runners and walkers from completing the course.

Richard Connery was second, followed by Nick Wagner, Laurie McGowan and Dawson Milbury.

Karoline Larramore was the first female across the line in a time of 53:30 followed closely by Abigail Bonnington.

The Smith’s Cove Fire Department has held the run for three years now as fundraiser for the volunteer department.

I’ll post a photo of the finish board for now and try to get the rest of the results typed and searchable later tonight.
