Maria Rodrigues, left, of Kentville, and Haley McDonald and Jayda Veinot, both of Port Williams, are all part of the Basketball Nova Scotia U-17 girls’ provincial team. The three are among nine Valley players who will compete at the national U-15 and U-17 championships starting July 25 in Edmonton, in addition to Deon Wilson of Kentville, head coach of the U-17 boys’ provincial team.

A number of Valley players will be part of the action when the Canada Basketball U-15 and U-17 championships kick off this Friday, July 25 in Edmonton.

Nova Scotia has teams participating in all four divisions – U-15 and U-17, boys and girls – with all but the U-15 boys’ team including multiple Valley players.

Maia Timmons of Hantsport and Alaina Poirier of Kentville are both on the Nova Scotia U-15 girls’ team.

Maria Rodrigues of Kentville and Haley McDonald and Jayda Veinot, both of Port Williams, are part of the U-17 girls’ provincial team.

Meanwhile, Matt Ingham of Wolfville, Gage Sabean of Port Williams, Dre Medicraft of Canning and Mitch Tempro of Three Mile Plains are all part of the U-17 boys’ team, which is coached by Deon Wilson of Kentville.

All the local players attend Horton High School save for Medicraft, who is a student at Northeast Kings Education Centre.

Action in all four divisions gets underway July 25, with round robin seeding games set for July 25 and 26. In each division, all 10 teams are then re-seeded, based on the round robin, and enter the playoff round beginning July 27.

Play in both the championship and consolation brackets continues July 28 and 29, with the medal games in all four divisions set for July 30.

More information on the championships, including a full schedule, live streaming of games and results once they become available, can be accessed through the Basketball Nova Scotia website at www.basketballnovascotia.com.
