A standoff in Glenholme, Colchester County, ended in tragic fashion late Sunday afternoon.

A 44-year-old man, who had barricaded himself in his home for nearly 10 hours Feb. 9, was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot. He was the only occupant of the home, located on Highway 2 near Little Dyke Road, and no other injuries were reported.

The RCMP is withholding the man’s identity pending notification of family.

RCMP Cpl. Scott MacRae said it was unknown at press time if anyone else lived at the residence.

RCMP responded to the scene at 8:30 a.m. Sunday after it was reported the man was threatening to harm himself. When police arrived and tried to make contact with him, he threatened to harm himself or police.

An RCMP emergency response team and a negotiator were brought to the scene to try to make contact with the man, but repeated attempts failed to do so.

Cpl. MacRae said it was unknown at what time the man died, but that would be determined as the investigation continues. RCMP remained on scene late onto the evening. Paramedics were also on scene throughout the day.

The man was found at 5:45 p.m. as the emergency response team, with special equipment to deal with such situations, entered the home.

About a dozen nearby residents were evacuated from their homes and were allowed to return at about 6:15 p.m. Traffic was also blocked along that highway, which was reopened shortly after the man was discovered.
