Updated: Jan. 11

A 21-year-old man missing since Wednesday from the East Coast Forensic Hospital in Dartmouth has been located safely.

Maxim Baril-Blouin went missing during a supervised outing into the community in what Aileen Brunet, the hospital’s clinical director, described as an “uncommon” occurrence.

The hospital serves patients almost exclusively from the judicial system who have been deemed either not criminally responsible and unfit to stand trial for reasons of mental disorder, or are under a court-ordered assessment.

Brunet said hospital staff were primarily concerned about Baril-Blouin’s disappearance because of an unspecified but “relatively serious” medical condition.

In a news release issued Jan. 10, Capital Health said Baril-Blouin posed an increased risk to himself and others the longer he was away from medication and treatment.

“Technically, everybody in the system is deemed to pose what the law describes as a significant threat to the safety of the public,” said Brunet. “(But) it doesn’t mean a day-to-day risk.”

The province is asking for the public’s help in tracking down a man missing from a Dartmouth hospital since Wednesday afternoon.

Maxim Baril-Blouin, 21, went missing during a supervised community trip away from the East Coast Forensic Hospital in Dartmouth.

The facility serves patients exclusively from the judicial system who have been deemed either not criminally responsible, unfit to stand trial for reasons of mental disorder, or are under a court-ordered assessment.

A spokeswoman for Capital Health said Baril-Blouin had been found not criminally responsible, but could not provide details.

In a news release issued Friday, Capital Health said Baril-Blouin suffers from a physical health condition that increases risk to himself and others the longer he is away from medication and treatment.

He may be travelling outside Nova Scotia.

Baril-Blouin is about five-foot-six-inches-tall and weighs 145 pounds. He has scars on his back and a cross tattooed on his upper left arm. He has green eyes and short blond-brown hair. He was last seen wearing a green fleece sweater, grey jacket and pants, grey sneakers and a black DC baseball cap.

Anyone with information as to Baril-Blouin’s whereabouts is asked to contact their local law enforcement agency.

It seems bureaucrats have knitted themselves into a comfortable mitten. No responsibility, no accountability, no common sese. Perfect Orwellian world!

so...let me get this straight. He may be a danger to himself or others but you can't say what his condition is?? There's a limit to the provisions of health privacy. I totally respect the rights of the mentally ill but the public needs to know what to do if they happen to encounter this young man who may be experiencing difficulties right at this moment.
