Line producer Dugald McLaren, left, gives the crew of Did He Do It? some direction while filming on Gerrish Street.
Bits and pieces of a true crime documentary series in the works for Discovery ID will bear an eerie resemblance to the Avon region.
The television series, dubbed Did He Do It?, was partially filmed in Windsor and West Hants throughout the summer.
Based on real crimes, Did He Do It?predominantly reexamines murders that rattled small American towns as far back as the 1980s.
In some cases, the assumed culprit was convicted and jailed. In others, a suspect was set free because there was not enough evidence to support a guilty verdict.
Dugald McLaren, line producer for Did He Do It?, said DNA analysts required a pool of blood to link a suspect to a crime when many of the murders in the TV series were initially investigated.
Considering the technological advances that have made it easier to prove innocence or guilt, Did He Do It? is a documentary-style series that takes viewers back to the crime scene for a modern reevaluation of a dated crime.
McLaren, a Tantallon resident, promptly thought of Windsor when he was asked to find a place to film reenactments of crimes that mainly occurred in northern New York, Virginia and Alaska.
“They asked me to find somewhere that would double as small-town America so I took them to Windsor,” McLaren said.
He found more than he’d bargained for in Windsor. When the low-budget production was in need of some extra talent during a scene shot in Windsor’s courthouse, Mayor Paul Beazley volunteered to play the judge.
On another occasion, McLaren was dining at the Spitfire Alehouse when he learned his server, Tasha Barker, had some experience acting.
“She ended up being cast in a very important role, and she’s very good,” he said.
McLaren, who started working the film industry 18 years ago, said Windsor is a prime location for filming, and he’ll keep the Little Town of Big Firsts in mind for future productions.
An air date has yet to be released for Did He Do It?.
