A popular television reality show has inspired a new fundraising event for SHYFT Youth Services, which will have their own “amazing race” Saturday, Aug. 23.

Scheduled to start at 10 a.m., the event will begin at the organization’s house at 6 Trinity Place in Yarmouth.

From there, teams of two will travel to various locations for what is billed as a “fast-paced, exciting and fun” activity.

Proceeds from the event – and from a barbecue that will follow the race – will help SHYFT provide services to at-risk youth and homeless youth in the tri-county region.

The race could become a yearly event for SHYFT.

“If it turns out good and people enjoy it, we hope to do it annually,” said Tanika Seabrook, SHYFT support worker and race organizer.

The registration fee is $40, but the cost is just $30 for participants who sign up before Aug. 15.

Adam Dolliver, executive director of SHYFT Youth Services, says staff have been working hard on the race and he hopes people will turn out, have a good time and support the cause.

Volunteers are needed for the event and anyone interested in lending a hand is invited to contact SHYFT (881-3111). People can help out with the race itself or with the barbecue that will be held afterwards.

SHYFT Youth Services get their core funding from the Department of Community Services, but Dolliver says fundraising is needed too, hence activities like the upcoming race.

SHYFT works with youths between 16 and 24 years of age. The organization’s services include a “transitional housing option” for young people. SHYFT can house seven youths at its Yarmouth house. How long they stay can vary, depending on their situation and circumstances.

“Right now we have four youths,” Dolliver said in an Aug. 5 interview. “It fluctuates.”

He and Seabrook started their positions early this past spring and both say they love their work.

Said Dolliver, “It’s a job where you can see you’re making a difference every day … very rewarding.”
