Contractors are drilling near the old Cornwallis River bridge in Kentville.

According to public works director Fred Whynot, the below the surface work is to see what types of soils are there, what weight the soil can support, and the depth to bedrock.

This information will be used by the designers for the replacement bridge.

Kentville has wanted to upgrade the bridge for several years now to address flooding and safety concerns. 

According to the provincial five-year plan for roadwork, bridge repair and paving, the Cornwallis River Bridge on Cornwallis Street/Route 359 is on the list for major bridge rehabilitation or replacement in 2015-2016. Also on the list for 2015-2016 in Kings County is the Whitman Road Bridge, which is an "other bridge project."
